If you want to avoid clashes with the version already installed, the pyenv project allows you to designate which of multiple installed versions of Python you want to use as the default. For instance, Python scripts written for that particular distribution may rely on a given version of Python. Some Linuxes bundle an older version of Python for a good reason.
